Final Project
Cultural Relationship
INSTRUCTIONS
"In this project, you are to produce a work of design that represents your relationship with culture"
For this final project we had to go to a specific area and look into the place history, attractions, current activities, types of people who are there and the visual elements, listing, events, smells, food.
Then we had to supplement it with reading additional information.
Then we had to use all of this information to translate it into a visual form, representing our relationship with culture.
Write a rationale describing your work and design process (150-200 words).
PROCESS
I chose a Cafe in Canggu, Bali as my specific area. It's called Copenhagen Canggu and for me it's a good visual and material illustration of how culture has an impact on the way we speak, behave and act, especially when it comes to mixing different cultures. I also thought that is was very interesting to work with a "multicultural" cafe in a world where we get more and more connected and more and more mixed.
Copenhagen Canggu is a small cafe in Canggu, about 10 min. from the beach. It's a minimalistic nordic inspired café, serving scandinavian inspired tapas dishes and open sandwiches. It was established in 2017. The cafe is an open cafe, so you can sit and stare and hear what's going on the road - like all the scooters driving by. The cafe is filled with different tourists and travellers. The cafe has a wallpainting of a place in copenhagen called "nyhavn" and it has "hygge" (Danish saying) on the wall. Even though you are surrounded by all this scandinavian inspired food, danish wallpaintings and scandinavian, minimalistic interior you find it completely normal that it is here in Canggu and that the waiters and kitchen staff are Indonesian - it becomes this perfect blend of cultures.
I knew i wanted to work with dots and lines and that the piece I was going to make should be a reference of the feeling i had in Copenhagen Canggu Cafe. So i started to look for inspiration - and decided that it should represent food in some kind of way.
Then I decided that the motive should be noodles and a coffee cup and I started doing sketches. I chose to work with my idea where you see the coffee cup from above - and then I started drawing.
Then I finished the drawing and i decided that i wanted to add a little text in english but also in chinese - to define the feeling of mixed cultures. So I added the text in Photoshop and colorcorrected the picture a little too.

Rationale describing of work and design process (150-200 words)
My Final project piece uses the design principles Dots and Lines. Furthermore, it also has contrast in the use of the black and white. I chose this appearance of the piece because I wanted to portray how I see different cultures being mixed. The Cafe Copenhagen Canggu is an good example of that, but you also see it a lot here in Malaysia.
I wanted to add the words “coffee” in english and “noodles” written in chinese to represent my relationship with culture. If I look at this piece I might see a Coffee Cup and i get it confirmed because i can read the english lettering at the bottom - But if you are chinese you might see the noodles. By that it represents my relationship with culture. Even though we are getting more and more mixed and congruent, I think you will always look for what you find familiar - especially when you are in a foreign place. You might look for the same food you have in your home country, like rye bread - or you might even build an entire community called “chinatown” in Kuala lumpur in Malaysia.
